Inter-University Environmental Debate 2026 Held in Jessore; JSTU Crowned Champion

A three-day Inter-University Environmental Debate 2026 concluded in Jessore with enthusiastic participation from students, educators, and environmental advocates, aiming to inspire youth engagement in environmental protection and climate action.

The event was organized by the Department of Environment, Jessore, and implemented by the Government Teachers' Training College, Jessore. The competition was held from May 20 to 22 and featured spirited debates centered on environmental conservation, climate change, sustainable development, and civic responsibility.

The final debate and closing ceremony took place on Friday in the presence of heads of educational institutions, teachers, students, debaters, and environmentally conscious citizens from across the region.

A total of eight teams from universities and undergraduate institutions participated in the competition. The final debate topic was:

“In environmental conservation, the role of the people—not the government—is paramount.”

The final round was moderated by renowned debater and 18th National Television Debate champion Uttam Roy. After a highly competitive contest, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JSTU) emerged as champions by defeating Jessore Cantonment College in the final round.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Professor Md. Akhtarul Islam, Principal of the Government Teachers’ Training College, Jessore, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in developing leadership, critical thinking, and social responsibility among students. He noted that the debate competition created a valuable platform for young participants to express their ideas and responsibilities regarding environmental conservation.

Mohammad Ataur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment, Jessore, stated that the primary goal of the event was to raise environmental awareness among the younger generation and cultivate responsible citizens capable of addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

The event received organizational support from “GenEd: The Learning Advocates,” a student organization of the Government Teachers’ Training College, Jessore.
